What is an MOT?

MOT testing is required by law on all vehicles in the UK that are 3 years old or older. This annual inspection follows strict criteria set out by the DVSA that determine if your car is fit for purpose and in a roadworthy condition.

The MOT test covers a wide range of vehicle safety checks including tyres, lights, emissions, and seatbelts, and can only be carried out by an MOT garage with DVSA-approved examiners.

During the MOT test the nominated tester who is there to assess your vehicle, will conduct a comprehensive inspection to ensure the vehicle is in roadworthy condition. This is not the equivalent of having your vehicle serviced as an MOT test does not check the general mechanical condition of the vehicle. The MOT assessment is based on the condition of the vehicle on that particular day.

If the vehicle passes, the nominated tester will separately list and inform you of any ‘advisory’ or ‘minor’ items that will require attention shortly so you can keep an eye on them.

How much is an MOT test?

  • MOT – £54.00
  • Class 7 MOT – £58.60

FAQs

1. What is an MOT?

An MOT (Ministry of Transport) test is a mandatory annual inspection required by law for all vehicles in the UK that are three years old or older. The test follows strict criteria set out by the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) to ensure your vehicle is safe and roadworthy. It covers a wide range of safety checks, including tyres, lights, emissions, and seatbelts.

2. Who conducts the MOT test?

The MOT test is carried out by a nominated tester at an MOT garage with DVSA-approved examiners. These professionals conduct a comprehensive inspection to ensure that your vehicle meets the required safety standards. It’s important to note that the MOT test is not a substitute for regular vehicle servicing, as it does not assess the general mechanical condition of the vehicle.

3. What does the MOT test cover?

The MOT test includes various safety checks such as:

  • Tyres
  • Lights
  • Emissions
  • Seatbelts The assessment focuses on the roadworthiness of the vehicle on the day of the test, and does not cover the overall mechanical condition.

4. What happens if my vehicle passes the MOT test?

If your vehicle passes the MOT test, the nominated tester will provide a certificate and inform you of any ‘advisory’ or ‘minor’ items that may need attention shortly. These items do not affect the vehicle’s immediate roadworthiness but should be monitored and addressed to avoid future issues.

5. How much does an MOT test cost?

The cost of an MOT test is £54.00 for standard vehicles. For Class 7 vehicles, the test costs £58.60. These prices ensure your vehicle meets the necessary safety standards and remains legally compliant on the road.
